July 10th will be the two-year anniversary of the night I nearly took my own life. My 12-year battle with depression & anxiety had finally caught up with me. As I had described to my husband, it was a "get help now, or there will be no later" situation.
Having spent the last 17+ years in corporate healthcare, the only place we thought to look for help was within a clinical setting. My husband made some calls and we found an inpatient psychiatric facility just down the road from our home.
The next 36 hours were some of the most shocking of my life. I had spent the last decade and a half believing that Western medicine knew how to care for those in need, and while that is a topic I could spend hours on, let's not for today. :-)
For today, I will simply say that it did not take long for me to realize that if I truly wanted to get better it was going to be up to me. It was going to be up to me to figure out how to heal my own nervous system. I applied for FMLA and set out on the journey of learning how to care for myself in a meaningful way. Since then I came to the painful truth that the career I had created no longer served me. I had no idea what I was going to do, I just knew I could not keep doing what I was.
The last two years have been a lot of work, both personally and professionally. In those two years, I've noticed that there seems to be a lot about being human that we are simply no longer taught. There are all of these lessons on how to navigate the uncharted waters of life that someone along the way decided they were no longer worth teaching. Frustrating, right?
In my Six Sigma days, I learned about 'scope of control', so while I am not sure who I would talk to about changes to the curriculum for "The School of Life", I can try to offer workshops from The Sundry that could help others fill the gaps the way I have done for myself over these last two years.
This July, we're launching "How to Human | A series of workshops on the things they forgot to teach us". The first offering is Subtle Energy 101
with Shannon Bryant of www.theholistickey.com. She is the person who showed me how to sense and manage my own energy and I think you will find her approach down to earth and realistic.
Look for more offerings to be added to the series soon, and if there is a topic you think we should add, let me know and I will see what I can do about making it happen! hello@thesundrykc.com
At the end of the day, The Sundry is here for its neighbors, and making sure we are offering what you need is key.
Be sure to check out all of the events we have coming up in July at The Sundry!
July 8th | Mindful Garden Party where we will be making fairy gardens and doing an all-ages meditation designed to get us in touch with what we are feeling and what we are needing.
July 15th | Petite Retreat at my house!
Lots of love,
Jess
